In the spring of 2009, Finnish director Kristian Smeds and a team of renowned Lithuanian theatre artists of different generations organized a few-week-long creative workshop based on The Cherry Orchard by Chekhov in an old summer cottage near Vilnius. It has grown into a unique artistic project transcending the boundaries of theater, film, performance art and other arts. In Lithuania, in the same cottage, it was demonstrated only a few times – in 2009 and 2010. It was broadcast live on Lithuanian TV and at one of the biggest theater festivals in Germany, Theater der Welt. In 2011, The Cherry Orchard toured at the Vienna Theater Festival (Viener Festwochen) and was regarded as one of the most interesting theatre events presented at that year’s festival.
Today, again, the question is: where can an artistic truth be born? A truth that could be shared with others – said director Kristian Smeds a decade ago before embarking on The Cherry Orchard project. Today, all the creative team members will meet on the renovated stage of the Youth Theater and look for an answer to this question. After a week of rehearsals, they will present a new version of The Cherry Orchard developed especially for the Youth Theater which will only be shown once. It will be the last stop of The Cherry Orchard’s journey.
